At COTA ACT, our Strength for Life coordinator Diane Percy knows a thing or two about motivating people to maintain their health and wellness. “The key to a healthy lifestyle is consistency in everything we do.” Percy says.
Easier said than done on a -2 degree morning, we think!
We know that in the winter months, it can be challenging to keep up with our exercise routines (including participating in our Strength for Life program) due to daylight savings, colder weather and changes in our seasonal habits and activities.
With a few adjustments and mindful practices, we can all continue to enjoy the benefits of group physical activity in the winter. Remember – keeping fit and healthy throughout the colder season is not just great for your physical health, it contributes positive outcomes to your mental health too. And if some days the motivation to come to class is a bit low, remember how engaging and fun the social aspect of the class can be!
Here are some tips on how to keep up your exercise routine in winter:
- Dress Appropriately
- Layer Up: Wear layers that can be removed as you warm up. Choose moisture-wicking materials to keep sweat away from your skin and prevent chills.
- Warm Accessories: Don’t forget hats, gloves, and scarves to protect against the cold when traveling to and from your Strength for Life class, or when going on your brisk morning walks!
- Warm-Up Indoors
- Pre-Class Warm-Up: Start with a gentle warm-up at home to get your muscles ready for exercise and to ease the transition to the colder environment.
- Stretching: Incorporate dynamic stretches that get your blood flowing and your muscles loosened up before heading to your exercise class.
- Stay Hydrated
- Drink Water: It’s easy to forget to hydrate in colder weather, but it’s just as important as in the summer. Drink water before, during, and after your class.
- Warm Beverages: Enjoying a warm herbal tea can be a comforting way to stay hydrated before and after exercise.
- Indoor Alternative
- Home Workouts: If attending a class is not possible, maintain your routine with online exercise videos or virtual classes with your group. You can browse the many exercise options available on our YouTube channel. You might be familiar with these exercises from your Strength for Life personalised program!
- Stay Connected
- Social Interaction: Maintaining social connections is important for mental well-being. Continue to engage with your exercise group – even on the days when it’s a bit harder to get out of bed!
- Accountability: Partner with a workout buddy to keep each other motivated and accountable.
By taking these steps, you can stay fit, healthy, and connected throughout the winter months. If you have any questions about your current exercise program, the Strength for Life classes or would like to learn more about our Strength for Life providers, contact us via the button below.
