Rhythm & Resilience : Stories of Music and Community – Intergenerational samba workshops led by Raio De Sol

Spend your Sunday with Raio De Sol, Canberra’s Communtiy Samba Band a full-day, intergenerational program at Haig Park as part of the Upstageing Festival, combining workshops, performance, storytelling, and cultural display.

The final part of the program is two public, intergenerational samba workshops led by Raio De Sol. The workshop(s) will run for approximately 1.5 hours (including a short break) and will introduce participants to Brazilian percussion through cultural history, a short performance, learning one accessible percussion piece (with breaks and chorus), and hands-on experience with two different percussion instruments. The workshops will be open to the public and designed to be inclusive of all ages and abilities.

Salt House Community Centre will serve as the hub for the workshops and conversation, and will also host a small pop-up display celebrating the history of Raio De Sol. This will include archival gig posters, past costumes/uniforms, and looping video content such as short interviews with older members.

End the afternoon by stepping into the rhythm yourself. This two part 90-minute interactive workshop introduces participants to Brazilian percussion traditions in an accessible and welcoming format.

The session includes:

• A short introduction to the cultural roots of samba
• A live demonstration by Raio De Sol
• Learning one simple, layered samba piece
• Hands-on experience playing two different percussion instruments
• A short break midway through

The workshop is open to all ages and abilities. No prior musical experience is needed.
