Clay carving workshops series – Workshop 1 – Relief carving on pre-made clay forms –

Carve clay on a pre-made unfired clay object in one of three workshops, facilitated by experienced artist/educator, Amanda Andlee Poland.

In this workshop participants will

1.be introduced to relief style carving techniques,

2. apply carving techniques to create surface decoration on a vessel, based on plant forms from the Australian National Botanic Gardens,

3. use plants with personal or historical significance.

Source material will be examples of dried leaves, photographs, historical information, and the Banksia Gardens just outside the workshop space. You are encouraged to bring your own reference materials (no living or dried plants)

Pre-thrown leather hard clay vessels will be provided. All tools provided. Bring an apron or tea towel to protect clothing.

The completed carved vessels will be fired and available for collection at a later date.

Carving techniques and processes will be introduced. All tools and equipment provided.
The clay works will be fired and available later for collection. No prior experience needed.

9.30-12.30pm (3 hours) – Suitable for adults, all abilities and experience welcome

Three clay carving workshops, facilitated by experienced artist/educator Amanda Andlee Poland, will be held on Sunday 22 March 2026 in conjunction with her solo exhibition, DHULWA/BANKSIA re leaf, held in the Visitor Centre Gallery, Australian National Botanic Gardens.

It is recommended that you view the exhibition and the Banksia Gardens before the workshop session.
